The American Academy in Rome was chartered as a private institution by an act of Congress in 1905, and it remains today a private institution supported by gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations and universities, as well as by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the United States Department of Education.
