TYPES OF MOLDS FOR SIGILLATA VESSELS FROM APULUM AND MICASASA (DACIA): INFLUENCES, INTERFERENCE, AND SIMILARITIES

Claudia Baluta

By the end of the second century AD, the importation of sigillata from well-known production centers in the Roman West had declined considerably. This decrease was determined by the local manufacture of similar kinds of vessels in the main centers of Dacia Superior.

This presentation is the result of a critical examination of the molds for terra sigillata from Apulum, the capital of Dacia Superior and Micasasa, the largest and the most important city of the province. Although systematic archaeological research has not yet been completed in Apulum and Micasasa, the observations are clear. We have already detected some important patterns concerning the creation of some vessels belonging to the general typology, but with a later chronology; the use of some stamps with western influences, but with a unique arrangement of ornaments; the exchange of specialized artisans who influenced specific production zones in a reciprocal way; the competition for trade with their products on numerous markets of Roman Dacia.
