PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF ANALYSIS OF POTTERY FROM ALTINO

Malgorzata Daszkiewicz, Gerwulf Schneider, Francesca Ferrarini and
Margherita Tirelli

In the course of analyses of black gloss pottery and gray ware from northern Italy twenty-seven samples from Altino were taken for analysis by WD-XRF for major and trace elements. Thin section studies and MGR-analysis (see poster by Daszkiewicz et al.) were also applied. The aim of the study was to distinguish groups of different provenances and to get information on local production and on the origins of the imports. We obtained a clear result: the samples of black gloss pottery fell into at least three groups that were also present at Aquileia and, at both sites, probably represent imports. The analyzed samples of gray ware differ from all groups of black gloss pottery and from gray ware found in Aquileia. This indicates a limited regional distribution of gray ware. From comparison with analysis of clay samples from Altino it can be concluded that gray ware may have been locally made.
