LATE ROMAN AMPHORAE AT KARDAMENA (ANCIENT HALASARNA) ON COS. THE UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS EXCAVATIONS.

Chariklia Diamanti

The University of Athens excavations at Kardamena (ancient Halasarna) on Cos, which started on 1985 and continues to the present day, revealed a large number of late Roman amphorae. This material consists of several well-known types from the late Roman period. A key question is whether or not some of these amphorae were produced locally. The quantity and the variety of these types suggests that this region was important in the network of Mediterranean trade.
