PRODUCTION OF POTTERY AND FIRMALAMPEN AT EMONA

Janka Istenic, Malgorzata Daszkiewicz, Gerwulf Schneider

Macroscopic examination of the pottery and lamps from Emona revealed two fabric groups (Fabrics F 7 and F 8) that are common among the kitchen wares and simple tablewares of this site. For this reason it is supposed that they were produced at Emona. To evaluate this assumption chemical (WD, XRF) and mineralogical analyses (thin sections, refiring) were performed on samples of these macroscopically established groups. The same kinds of analyses were (or will be) applied to samples of reference materials, namely clay used by recent brickworks in the area or pottery backfilled in the kiln excavated at Emona, Štefanova street (cf. Istenic J., L. Plesnicar-Gec, "A pottery kiln at Emona," RCRF Acta 37, 2001, 141-146). Preliminary results, which still do not include analyses of the above mentioned reference group 1, seem to confirm the relevance of macroscopically established Fabrics F 7 and 8.
