LEAD-GLAZED WARE AND ITS CULTIC FUNCTION

Marleen Martens and Fabienne Vilvorder

The sporadic appearance of a limited production of lead-glazed ware at the end of the 2nd and the 3rd century in some workshops in the north of Gaul provokes the following questions: 1. What was the underlying purpose of these items? 2. From where did the local craftsmen obtain the manufacturing know-how?

Some recent discoveries have led us to believe that this kind of ceramic was produced with a specific ritual purpose in connection with oriental cults.
