REGIONAL MUSEUM KRANJ, UNIVERSITY OF LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA: AMPHORAS DRESSEL 24 IN EMONA

Verena Perko

Among Roman ceramics Dressel 24 amphoras have rarely been identified. For this amphora type the Black Sea origin has been presumed, as they were often found among the Danubian materials. The vessel contained about 57 to 58 liters and was frequently accompanied by the Greek tituli picti.

In Emona they are quite frequent. Above all the fragments of characteristic rim, lenticular handle section, and a short cylindrical bung, rounded-off at the end, have been identified. The vessels appear in yellow-brown fabric with a lot of mica.
Of great importance is the discovery of a rim fragment from a stratigraphic unit together with accurately dated ceramic materials; i.e. some Late Padanian sigillata forms, eastern imports from the Late Flavian Period, 'pompejanisch rotte Platten', and Aegean ware.

The materials are worth of more exhaustive treating, as the Dressel 24 amphoras are also frequently found among the ceramics of some east Adriatic wrecks and undersea finds.
