EXPERIMENTS TO MAKE SAMIAN WARE IN PANNONIA

Klára Póczy

Negative moulds and fragments made at the same time have been found in various towns of Pannonia, which seem to be attempts to make the popular Samian ware vessels: in Scarbantia (Sopron) along the Pannonian part of the Western road (Amber road), in Aquincum (Budapest) at the Eastern border of the province - at the intersection of the elongation of the via Postumia and the limes road, and in Siscia (Sisak) on the Southern border river Sava. The experimental pieces are interesting because the same features were used and have been varied in various ways. The effects came to Pannonia though the mediation of Aquileia at the beginning of the AD 2nd century. The topic gives new data to the beginning period of the independent work of the potters.
