TERRA SIGILLATA IMPORTS IN SANTARÉM

Catarina Viegas

This presentation is based on research carried out on terra sigillata from archaeological sites located in the former Roman town of Scallabis (known today as the "Alcáçova" area of the town of Santarém, west-central Portugal).
The studied materials include the most common types of terra sigillata (Italian type, South Gaulish, Hispanic, North African, late Hispanic and Phocean) as well as a few fragments of Eastern sigillata A - identified and dated from the pre-Augustan period - recorded for the first time in Portugal.

Although the supply of terra sigillata to the Alcáçova de Santarém took place from the middle of the 1st century B.C. to the middle of the 6th century A.D., we found that 70% of these imports occurred prior to the end of the 1st century A.D. Import patterns are also analyzed and compared to other sites on the Iberian Peninsula.
