The event is organized by T. Corey Brennan, FAAR’88 (American Academy in Rome), with Paolo Pedinelli (Coni Servizi Spa); Tommaso Magnifico (Archivio Moretti); and Maria Grazia D’Amelio (Uniroma2), with the expected participation of Giuseppe Capizzano, Claudia Conforti, Fabrizio de Cesaris, Valentina Follo, Marco Giunta, Antonella Greco, Margherita Guccione, Luisa Montevecchi, Alessandra Muntoni, Alessandra Nizzi, Giorgio Ortolani, Giancarlo Palmerio, Paolo Portoghesi, Bruno Reichlin, Renato Giulietto Ricci, Marco Rinaldi, Salvatore Santuccio, Romana Severini, and Piero Cimbolli Spagnesi, with the patrocinio of CONI (Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano).

The day is dedicated to the architect Luigi Moretti and specifically to the years in which he worked at the Foro Mussolini (1933-1941), a period in which he moved with extraordinary creativity from interior design to drawing up the overall plans for what was designed as both a citadel of sport and a new monumental entrance to the city.

The workshop will also feature video projections and an exhibition of archival materials, thanks to the generosity of the Archivio Attilio Calzavara-Rome, Archivio Achille Capizzano-Rome, Archivio Moretti Magnifico-Rome, Archivio Renato Ricci-Rome, Archivio Centrale dello Stato, Archivio MAXXI Architettura-Rome, Archivio Fotografico Andrea Jemolo, Arthur & Janet C. A complete program schedule follows below in PDF format.

Conversations That Matter is a series of public programs that builds on the innovative but often-specialized work that takes place in the studies, studios, lecture hall, library, and auditorium of the American Academy in Rome. The series invites participants to communicate the general relevancy of their work to an audience that reaches beyond the scholarly and artistic fields of the American Academy. The aim of the program is to engage a diverse external audience in the Academy’s ongoing scholarly and creative dialogue.

This edition of Conversations That Matter will feature a discussion on the top political, cultural, and economic challenges currently facing Italy.

American Academy in Rome Director Christopher S. Celenza, FAAR’94, will lead the discussion. Scheduled panelists include:
~ Rachel Donadio, Rome Bureau Chief of The New York Times, responsible for Italy, the Vatican, and the broader southern Mediterranean
~ Miguel Gotor, Professor of Modern History at the University of Turin and editorialist for la Repubblica

Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica (AIAC)

The American Academy in Rome will host a panel presentation of AIAC, the Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica/International Association for Classical Archaeology (AIAC), in that organization's longstanding Incontri series. The current President of the Association is Elizabeth Fentress, former American Academy in Rome Mellon Professor-in-Charge (1996-1999).

Founded in Rome in 1945, AIAC aims to facilitate international collaboration among classical archaeologists through coordinating conferences and congresses of classical archeology. It also serves in Rome as the principal clearinghouse for information on archaeology-related scholarly events. AIAC publishes Fasti Online, the premier international database for archaeological excavations in 13 countries in the territory of the former Roman Empire (including of course Italy), which in turn continues its print Fasti Archaeologici (published 1948-1987). Since 2000, AIAC also has organized a series of monthly Incontri in Rome, where young scholars from Italian universities and the many foreign institutes in the city can present their research.

The theme for this evening at the American Academy will be Art and Society, moderated by prof. Carlo Pavolini (Università della Tuscia di Viterbo). During a break in the presentations, audience members will also have a chance to explore an underground section of the Aqua Traiana (an aqueduct of the early second century AD) that—as chance would have it—runs directly beneath the Academy's ground level Lecture Room and extends well below the Academy Cortile.

Presenting at the American Academy in Rome on the AIAC program will be Angelo Amoroso (Sapienza Università di Roma), Il lato orientale del Foro Romano. Da Ottaviano ad Augusto; Alexandre Vincent (École française de Rome), I musicisti e la città (fine repubblica-III secolo d.C.); and Margaret Andrews (American Academy in Rome), Domitian's Forum: Urbanization and Social Reform.
