ROBERT S PIRIE LECTURE

Merle K. Langdon
Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Classical Studies, American School of Classical Studies at Athens

Roman Attica

Tuesday 20 March 2001
Lecture Room - 6 pm

Attica, the territory of the ancient city state of Athens, does not readily come to mind when thinking about areas of the eastern Mediterranean that were prominent in the Roman era. And in fact, it was certainly not on the same standing with districts like Egypt or Asia Minor. What was Athens' hinterland like in Roman times? Was it thriving or a backwater? The talk will consider the archeological and epigraphic evidence in an asssessment of Attica under Roman rule.
