LECTURE: Verena Vidrih Perko
Slovenia in the Roman Period: history seen
through the amphora evidence
Tuesday 16 January
Lecture Room - 6 pm
Senior Curator, Regional Museum of Kranj and Adjunct
Professor, University of Ljubljana
The lecture will sketch the end of the prehistoric period
on the territory of modern Slovenia, describing the cultural groups
that inhabited it before the arrival of the Romans. Vidrih Perko will
trace the Romans' first commercial and military contacts in Istria and
the foundation of military posts at Emona, Celeia and Poetovio along
the Amber Route. She will contrast the decline and fall of Roman cities
in Pannonia and Noricum with their continued existence and development
in Istria and discuss the establishment of hilltop strongholds and the
fortified line of the Claustra Alpium Iuliarum. The lecture concludes
with the arrival of the Slavs.
