LECTURE: Dr. Michael P. Richards
New Scientific Evidence of Ancient Diet
in the Mediterranean
Thursday 22 February
Lecture Room - 6 pm
Lecturer in Archeology Science, University of
Bradford, UK and Director, Stable Isotope/Medical Research Programme
Dr. Richards helped to pioneer research at the Oxford
Research Laboratory for Archeology in the UK on collagen samples taken
from long bones of adults to reveal the amount and type of protein (vegetable,
animal or marine) consumed over roughly the last ten years of their
lives. His work has been instrumental in overturning previously held
"pet theories" on ancient diet. His talk will concentrate on work he
has done on ancient diet at Mediterranean sites from the Neolithic to
the Classical periods, including Pompeii.
