LECTURE: Malaria Across Two Millennia: Science and Magic

  • Frank Snowden, Professor of History, Yale University, and Resident in Modern Italian History, American Academy in Rome
  • David Soren, Professor of Classics, The University of Arizona
  • Lucy Shoe Meritt, Resident in Classical Archaeology, American Academy in Rome

This mini-colloquium will focus on ancient and modern perceptions of malaria. Snowden will discuss the breakthrough in the understanding of malaria by Roman physicians at the beginning of the 20th century (the Rome School of Malariology) that led to the world's first eradication program. Soren will discuss how the ancient Romans dealt with malaria using magic and witchcraft, and how archaeologists are using new ideas to determine malaria-affected ancient sites.
