CONFERENCE: The Maritime World of Ancient Rome

In 1978-9, the American Academy in Rome hosted a conference The Seaborne Commerce of Ancient Rome: Studies in Archaeology and History, subsequently published as Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome 36 in 1980. The present conference, organized by Robert L. Hohlfelder, will focus on advances in this scholarly field in the last 25 years, with sessions devoted to

  • "Ships and Seafaring in Ancient Rome"
  • "The Design and Construction of Roman Harbors"
  • "A New Look at Seaborne Trade ", and
  • a general forum on "The Romans and their Maritime World."
