PHOTOGRAPHS AND FILM PROJECTION

Thursday 10 April
Robert Smithson Gallery - 6pm

Elyse Goldberg, Curator of the Robert Smithson Estate, New York City, presents photographs and a video of "Asphalt Rundown," Smithson's 1969 performance outside Rome. In this signal work of Land Art, created for Fabio Sargentini's L'Attico Gallery, Smithson engaged a dump truck to unload asphalt down the side of a quarry. Smithson's influential piece marked his break with the painterly "drips" of Abstract Expressionism and his commitment to a new type of land-based performance, captured through video and photography.
