ROBERT S PIRIE LECTURE: James P. Sickinger

Thursday 6 February
Lecture Room - 6pm

The large numbers of surviving inscriptions from ancient Greece and Rome seem to suggest widespread literacy in the ancient world, but in recent years scholars have questioned this assumption and even doubted whether some inscriptions were meant to be read. Focusing primarily on inscribed public documents, Sickinger's lecture will consider the reasons why some texts were inscribed on stone and bronze and what evidence there is for their use and consultation.
