The Academy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit institution. Though chartered by Congress in 1905 and honored by a Joint Resolution of Congress upon the celebration of its Centenary, the American Academy is the only one among the twenty-four foreign academies in Rome not directly government-supported. It relies upon the charitable contributions of individuals, foundations, corporations, other American academic institutions, as well as the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities, to support its $5 million annual program budget. Gifts to the American Academy in Rome are deductible for income- and estate-tax purposes to the extent permitted by law. The Academy welcomes your support.

JANUS, the Roman god of passage, is usually shown with two faces, one regarding the past and the other surveying the future. Long associated with the Janiculum hill, site of the American Academy in Rome, the Janus head was chosen to symbolize the Academy's role as a link between past and future.
