Rome ca. 1820: An Album of Drawings by Luigi Poletti at the American
Academy in Rome Christina Huemer An album in the Library of the American Academy in Rome records the observations
of the Neoclassical architect Luigi Poletti (1792-1869) from 1819 to 1822,
before his involvement in the rebuilding of S. Paolo fuori le Mura, the
work for which he is best known. Poletti's measured drawings illustrate
churches and chapels in Rome, villas and tombs in the Castelli Romani,
and archaeological sites. Of special interest today are his drawings of
places that no longer exist, such as the church of S. Caterina in Thermis
(Rome), the late 18th-century interiors of the Villa Mondragone (Frascati),
and the excavations below the Teatro Valle (Rome).
