The Publications Program

The mission of the publications program at the American Academy in Rome is to further the intellectual goals of the institution by providing vehicles for the dissemination of the highest quality scholarly work in the arts and humanities, particularly in those fields traditionally represented by the Academy. The program draws upon the Academy's scholarly constituency and others to foster the international reputation of the Academy as a cultural crossroads, appealing to scholars not only in America and Italy but worldwide. The University of Michigan Press distributes and/or publishes three series for the Academy:

Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome -- first published in 1915 and currently edited by Vernon Hyde Minor, FAAR '00, of the University of Illinois with the assistance of an Advisory Board, the series today is presented as an annual volume containing notable essays on a range of subjects drawn from the disciplines represented in the Academy's School of Classical Studies, including archaeology, classical studies, history of art, post-classical humanistic studies and modern Italian studies; click here for Tables of Contents of recent volumes:

    Supplements to Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome -- present illustrated monographic work, archaeological reports and the proceedings of conferences and symposia sponsored by the Academy;

    Papers and Monographs of the American Academy in Rome -- this series, which began in 1919, presents recent, non-illustrated, monographic work in any of the disciplines represented by the School of Classical Studies.

In addition to the above, Cambridge University Press in collaboration with the Academy publishes Monuments of Papal Rome, a series that examines important works commissioned by the Popes during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Joseph Connors, RAAR'87, and Irving Lavin, RAAR'72,'79, serve as the series editors.
