The manner in which the French and Italian Reformations unfolded had both striking similarities and evident contrasts, yet the historical investigation of each of these two phenomena has developed with little attention to the other. This conference will encourage reflection on the similarities, differences, and contacts between these powerful (yet ultimately at best only partially successful) movements of religious renewal. There are several goals: to shed light on direct contacts between events and individuals in the two areas; to examine the divergent research agendas that have shaped the investigation of evangelicalism and Protestantism in the two regions; and to highlight major explanatory questions that have as yet been too little explored. Why, for instance, did the diffuse underground currents of heresy found in both countries up through the decade of the 1550s congeal in France into a dense network of organized Reformed churches, when no such network ever took shape in Italy?
The conference, made possible with a grant from The Florence Gould Foundation, has been organized by the École française de Rome, the Università degli studi di Pisa and the Université de Paris-Sorbonne Paris IV, with the participation of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and the American Academy in Rome.
