This one-day conference presents design practices and points of view on contemporary design. Four presentations (by one curator and three practitioners, an architect and two designers) will explore conceptual issues and concerns, new materials, innovative investigations of standard materials, and issues of beauty and utility. The conference, made possible with a grant from The Tiffany & Co. Foundation, will be moderated by Pilar Viladas, design editor of The New York Times Magazine. She will be joined by: Matilda McQuaid, of the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum; Peter Testa, principal of TESTA of Los Angeles, recently profiled by Architectural Record as one of the most innovative design practitioners in the United States; designer Kevin Walz (FAAR'94), whose products include furniture, lighting, carpets, bath fittings, and cork furniture and flooring; and Constantin Boym (RAAR'06), who takes Curious George as his role model.
