Patrick J. Geary
Vernacularity, Performance, and Power in the Early Middle Ages

Tuesday 2 May

6pm Lecture
Villa Aurelia
L.go di Porta di S. Pancrazio, 1

Patrick J. Geary (Lester K. Little Resident in Medieval Studies, American Academy in Rome; Professor of History, University of California, Los Angeles) considers a wide variety of documents from the eighth to twelfth centuries that quote or reference vernacular phrases and sentences within otherwise Latin texts. Prof. Geary views the emplotment of fragments of proto-Italian, Hungarian, Germanic, proto-French, etc., within Latin texts from the perspective of performance theory as an aid to understanding strategies of communication, control, and the representation of law and public authority.
