His historical persona has been heavily shaped by his first biographers, among them several women, such as Esperance von Schwartz and Louise Goethe. Marjan Schwegman (Director, Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut te Rome; Professor of Cultural History, University of Utrecht) will discuss in what ways these women biographers’ portrait of Garibaldi differs from the one created by men such as Alexandre Dumas.
