Elizabeth Ann Clark
"Rome" in the Nineteenth-Century Protestant Imaginary: American Professors, Ancient "Pagans" and Early Christianity
Wednesday 23 April
6pm Lecture
Villa Aurelia
L.go di Porta di S. Pancrazio, 1

An appeal to the example of ancient Rome served many useful purposes for nineteenth-century American Protestant professors of theology. Surveying changes in approach to early Christianity’s relation to its Roman setting throughout the nineteenth century, this lecture highlights the development of the historiography of late antiquity in the emerging institutions of higher education in America. Elizabeth Ann Clark is John Carlisle Kilgo Professor of Religion at Duke University and American Academy in Rome Scholar in Residence.
