Maud Gleason
Fears and Fantasies of Transformation in the Roman Empire: The So-called Elephant Disease
Wednesday 30 April - Friday 9 May

In the ancient world there was a semi-imaginary disease that was thought to make people like animals. These lectures explore ancient beliefs about this disease: the fears of dehumanization it expressed and the hopes of redemption it inspired. Maud Gleason is a Lecturer in the Department of Classics at Stanford University. The Thomas Spencer Jerome Lecture Series is jointly administered by the University of Michigan and the American Academy in Rome.
