Is opera–always considered among our most stylized arts–in fact the most naturalistic form there is? The composer/librettist of Little Women and Lysistrata and the Composer in Residence of New York City Opera, 2001-2006, draws on Aristotle, Beethoven, Stanislavski and Busoni to describe a method of opera-making by which a piece begins in neither word nor music, but gesture. Mark Adamo is Composer in Residence at the American Academy in Rome.
