In December 1503, "the Great Captain," Gonzalo Fernández
de Córdoba, scored a definitive military victory against the French
in the battle for the Kingdom of Naples. With his triumphant entry into
the city of Naples in January 1504, the Spanish conquest of southern Italy
was complete, a major step towards the eventual Spanish pacification and
domination of much of Italy. For the following two centuries, the Spanish
Empire was the major force that dominated Italian affairs. On the 500th
anniversary of the Spanish Conquest of Naples, scholars from several countries
will focus on Italy in the age of the Spanish domination, 1500 to 1700.
