Lecture Room - 6pm Brian Copenhaver is Professor of Philosophy and History at the University of California, Los Angeles. He will give a lecture titled: "Picturing a Way Out of Magic." Picturing became a way of explaining in the new science promoted by Descartes. The same new science rejected the learned magic revived in the Renaissance, along with its philosophical underpinnings. How did picturing evolve in the two centuries before Descartes wrote? How was he able to use pictures as weapons against magic when others had used them to defend it?
