Racing with Death: Circus Sarcophagi and the Commemoration of Children in Roman Italy - Eve d'Ambra

Thursday 24 February
6pm - Lecture
Lecture Room

Sarcophagi decorated with scenes of chariot racing were the most popular choice for the commemoration of children, despite the popular culture of the circus with its reputation for violence, gambling, and magic. This adult theme, however, bestowed honor on deceased children and offered solace to bereaved parents.

Eve D'Ambra, FAAR'86, is Professor of Art at Vassar College and currently the Lucy Shoe Meritt Resident in Ancient Studies at the American Academy in Rome.
Please note that the American Academy in Rome requires all visitors attending events to present a legal document of identification.
