The exhibition features the art, design and history of the 'chair' as seen through the eye of designer and curator Kevin Walz (FAAR'94). The exhibition reveals the infinite designs, purposes and permutations of an every day object. Walz asks us to abandon our knowledge of chair icons of the past century and look instead with his eyes at the composition of form and materials, the use of technologies and processes of fabrication, and the sociological and cultural intentions that shape chair design. The selection of chairs represents several centuries, continents and cultures, and materials range from wood to plastics to metal and span infinite variations on design and purpose. At the opening, Masonic (Mason Bates, current Fellow in Musical Composition) will spin a set of downtempo electronica and trip-hop from around the world. The exhibit will be open on Thursdays from 4pm to 7pm and Saturdays
from 4pm to 7pm; and by appointment, tel: 06/5846459, from 6 November
until 13 December 2003.
