The Nobel Laureate in Physics for 1969, Prof. Gell-Mann is a Distinguished Fellow of the Santa Fe Institute and author of The Quark and the Jaguar: Adventures in the Simple and the Complex. His recent work has focused on the subject of complex adaptive systems and how knowledge and understanding are to be extracted from the welter of information that can now be transmitted and stored as a result of the digital revolution.

The Polsky Lectures were established in 2002 for bringing outstanding scientists to the Academy’s community of artists and scholars in the humanities. Previous Polsky Lecturers were Prof. Sir Harry Kroto and Prof. Rita Levi-Montalcini.
