Artist, New York, and Resident in Visual Arts, American Academy in
Rome Jenny Holzer will speak on public art in relation to her own practice.
Since the late 1970s, when her aphoristic Truisms and Inflammatory
Essays were posted anonymously around New York, Holzer's work has
sought to reformulate many of the givens of traditional art, especially
in the context of public spaces. Holzer will discuss her experience working
in the public sphere, from the early New York streetworks, to the more
recent xenon projections and (anti) memorials, including Black Garden,
Nordhorn, Germany (1994), Installation for the Reichstag, Bundestag,
Berlin (1999) and BLACKLIST, University of Southern California,
Los Angeles (1999).
