Lecture Room - 6pm Christopher M.S. Johns (FAAR'84) is Norman and Roselea Goldberg Professor of Art History at Vanderbilt University and Department of Education Resident in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies at the American Academy in Rome. He will give a lecture titled: "Art and the Catholic Revival in Napoleonic Paris: Antonio Canova's 'Penitent Magdalene'," in which he examines the crucial role played by this celebrated sculpture in the formation of the cultural and spiritual aesthetic of resurgent Christianity after more than a decade of persecution during the French Revolution. More broadly, he argues that the profound impact of Italian art in general has been seriously underestimated in the francocentric narratives of the history of French Romantic art. Please note that the American Academy in Rome requires all visitors attending events to present a legal document of identification. These programs are supported in part by the U.S. Department of Education.
