The Hidden God: Film and Faith
The idea of a hidden God has acquired a particular resonance in the language of cinema. Since the emergence of the medium in the 1890s, films with spiritual themes have been produced by the motion picture industry of almost every country. From the beginning of the sound period in the late 1920s, themes of hidden spirituality, or of spirituality's absence, have been pursued by directors throughout the world, and many movies have simultaneously insinuated and disguised the mystery that believers call God.

This series explores these themes in eight feature films produced between
the late 1930s and the present. Curated by Mary Lea Bandy, Celeste Bartos
Chief Curator of Film and Media at The Museum of Modern Art in New
York, and in collaboration with Mario Sesti, film critic in Rome.

The films will be shown in original language with English subtitles.
