Her work was first introduced at the P.S.1 Gallery and the Artists' Space in New York City. Defined as "constructed photos," Simmons' images of objects and dolls were first acclaimed in the 1980s. Laurie Simmons has exhibited at UCLA's Hammer Museum, the Walker Arts Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1985, and at the Biennale of Sydney in 1986. In Japan, Simmons' work appeared as part of the exhibition "Images in Transition" organized by the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, in 1990. She is the 2005 Roy Lichtenstein Resident in Visual Arts at the American Academy in Rome, and will talk on her art.
