The three-day conference will bring together musicologists, performers, and composers from Italy and the United States to consider the unique role of the American Academy in Rome in the development of American concert music and to celebrate the many historically prominent composers who have lived and worked at the Academy since its music program began in the 1920s. The conference will include colloquia and academic papers spanning the history of the music program, as well as lecture demonstrations and a recital of music for voice and piano drawn from the works of Rome Prize Fellows.
Participants will include: performers Susan Narucki, soprano,and Donald Berman, piano; musicologists Carol Oja (Harvard University), Andrea Olmstead (co-director, Casa Rustica Publications), Vivian Perlis (Yale University), and Judith Tick (Northeastern University); and composers Martin Brody, RAAR'01 (Wellesley College), John Harbison, RAAR'81 (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Richard Trythall, FAAR'67, RAAR'71 Music Liaison at the American Academy in Rome. The conference is made possible with the support of the Thaw Charitable Trust and The Barrington Foundation, Inc.
