Saturday 19 June - 9:30am-1pm Lecture Room This three-day conference will be held at the Università di Roma "La Sapienza", Sala Odeion, Museo dei Gessi on 17 June and at the American Academy in Rome on 18 and 19 June. The aim of the conference is to explore the cultural context in Rome under the papacy of Gregory XIII Boncompagni from a point of view that emphasizes its relationship to modernity. Particular attention will be given to the following themes: the relation between artistic production and scientific culture; forms and processes for the institutionalization of knowledge; the role of decorative programs as interpretive tools; the ceremonial, the ritual and the image of the city; the dawning of landscape painting as a genre; book trade and production; and the relationship between the practice of collecting, the discovery of the Roman underground and the early archeology of Christianity. To date, the Boncompagni pontificate has not received significant attention and it lacks a comprehensive monographic study. The conference aims to offer, for the first time, the opportunity to meet and compare results, methods and perspectives of research with the individual scholars that study this pontificate. The conference is co-sponsored by the American Academy in Rome, Università di Roma "La Sapienza" and the Department of Italian Studies, University of California, Berkeley. Please note that the American Academy in Rome requires all visitors attending events to present a legal document of identification. These programs are supported in part by the U.S. Department of Education.
