National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar
How to Apply

The Application and Acceptance Process
Applications must include the completed cover sheet, a current CV, and an essay in which you describe your project and what you can contribute to the seminar. In addition, two letters of recommendation should be sent separately by colleagues who can comment specifically on what you might contribute, and how the seminar might enhance your teaching, scholarship, and/or other professional development.

Be sure to follow NEH’s guidelines for writing the application essay. We expect applicants to describe some form of independent project that will be undertaken in conjunction with the work of the seminar. This might be an article, chapter of a book, or other research project, including one with a comparative dimension; a translation of a relevant text; a visual or computerized endeavor; or a project related to curricular development.

Please send copies of all application materials to the address below. Applications must be in hardcopy, not fax or e-mail.

The postmark deadline for applications is March 1, 2008. Selection will be determined by a panel comprising the program directors and two other professors in related fields. Successful applicants will be notified by April 15, 2008.

Upon Acceptance
When the roster is complete, a packet of information including the names of all the seminar participants, more detailed information on the seminar, housing and meal plans, NEH and American Academy material related to the seminar, and a preliminary reading list will be sent to you. Participants are encouraged to do as much reading as possible in advance, since the maximum time in Rome should be allowed for seminar discussion, field trips and individual research. While only reading knowledge of English is assumed for the general reading list, a list of references in Italian will also be supplied, since much of the newest work has been done by Italian scholars.

Participants will also be requested to provide details on research needs for the summer. This is especially important if your research requires access to special archives or libraries or other restricted sites. The Academy and the seminar Director will attempt to assist participants with gaining access to these sites, but in Italy such arrangements often take time.

Participants must make their own travel arrangements, hold a valid passport and are required to have health insurance that is valid in Italy.
