School in the early summer.
The American Academy in Rome invites applications
for the three-year position of Director of the Classical Summer School.
Program Background
Established in 1923, this annual six-week program is open to high school
teachers and graduate students of Latin, ancient history and the Classics
and also to advanced undergraduate students, middle school and two-year
college teachers, a significant component of whose teaching involves Latin,
ancient Greek or Classical civilization. The program is designed to provide
a well-founded understanding of the growth and development of the ancient
city of Rome and its immediate environs from the earliest times to the
age of Constantine through a careful study of material remains and literary
sources.
Responsibilities
The Director is responsible for the overall operation of the Classical
Summer School, including selection of participants, oversight of the budget,
preparation of syllabus, lectures and site visits, and evaluation of the
students in accord with the policies and guidelines established by the
Academy.
The Director reports to the Mellon Professor in the Humanities. In conjunction
with the Academy, an Assistant Director is selected who will provide on-site
program assistance as well as preparatory assistance as necessary. The
Academy's New York office assists the Director with publicity; preparation
of informational materials on the program; provision of information to
interested candidates; Internet announcements and website updating; and
other general administrative, budget and accounting tasks. The Rome staff
is the major resource for most of the activities that occur during the
operation of the Summer School.
While certain duties may be delegated to the Assistant Director, and certain
duties may be shared with the Assistant Director or appropriate Academy
staff, the overall responsibilities include:
- Identify and recommend to the Committee on the School of Classical Studies individuals to serve on the committee that reviews applications;
- Recommend to the Committee on the School of Classical Studies the recipient of the Mary Sollman Scholarship;
- Maintain a professional relationship with the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Commission, working to improve planning and coordination of its support for the Classical Summer School;
- Prepare and distribute orientation information and course materials;
- Organize lectures and tours;
- Coordinate permissions for site visits;
- Evaluate final exams and other assignments;
- Arrange student lodging and local transportation in Italy with the assistance of the Rome staff;
- Provide guidance to the New York office on advertising and marketing strategy;
- Prepare and adhere to the budget, in consultation with the New York and Rome offices;
- Report to the Academy on the Classical Summer School and the students;
- Evaluate and recommend changes and improvements to the Classical Summer School; and
- Submit an annual report to the Academy's Committee on the School of Classical Studies no later than August 31 of each year.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to teach on site;
- A record of teaching and scholarship relating to Roman topography, monuments and material culture;
- Excellent knowledge of the city of Rome in the Classical period and its extant remains (both on site and in museums) from the earliest times to the age of Constantine;
- Knowledge of Etruria and Latium is beneficial;
- Administrative experience;
- Conversational and reading knowledge of Italian;
- Knowledge of Latin;
- Faculty member at an American college or university;
- Ability to successfully work with a wide range of individuals including members of the Academy staff and community, program participants and others that interface with the program; and
- Physical ability to lead appropriate field trips.
