Housing and Accommodations

Participants will be accommodated in the newly renovated building at Via Masina 5b adjoining the main Academy building, with multi-room apartments. The majority of participants will be housed in double rooms with shared baths. These rooms will range in price from Euros 26 - Euros 29 per day. Participants requesting to stay alone in a double room with bath will pay Euros 52 per day, provided that there is availability. Those participants staying in a single room with or without bath can expect to pay Euros 36- Euros 39 per day. Applicants should note that there is no air conditioning either at the American Academy in Rome or in most public buildings in Rome. Lunch and dinner are provided at the Academy Monday through Saturday and cost Euros 6.50 - Euros 11, respectively. Each participant will receive a bill itemizing charges for rooms, meals, phone calls and other incidental expenses. The current rate of exchange (November 2002) is approximately $1.00 = Euro 1.00.

The NEH neither encourages nor discourages participants from bringing family members with them, but those who do so will be responsible for their own living arrangements. The American Academy in Rome may be able to accommodate accompanying spouses or partners, at an additional cost, depending on the availability of space, but it is unable to provide accommodations for those participants accompanied by children. Participants wishing to be accompanied by children should make alternative arrangements for housing in Rome.

Stipends and Expenses
The NEH provides stipends of $3,250 for each successful applicant, payable 1/2 in May and 1/2 at the midway point of the seminar. Participants in the seminar are responsible for meeting the costs of their travel to and from Rome, and their living and accommodation expenses while in Rome. Participants will be provided with bus passes and free passes to the city museums and art galleries for the period of the seminar.
