The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the position of Director of the Summer Program in Archaeology for the period 2004-2006.

Background
The American Academy in Rome is a center for independent study, advanced research and creative work in the fine arts and humanities. Founded in 1894, it is committed to identifying and nurturing the most promising American talent through the annual Rome Prize fellowship and related residency programs. The Academy also supports lectures, symposia, concerts, Fellows' performances and exhibitions both in Rome and the United States.

In addition, summer programs are offered each year: the Classical Summer School, the Summer Program in Archaeology, the Summer Program in Applied Palaeography, and, if funded, the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar. The Summer Program in Archaeology was established in 1991 to give graduate students of Latin, ancient history and the classics, as well as archaeology and art history, an overview of current developments in archaeological method and theory, focusing on ancient Italy and the ancient Mediterranean world.

Responsibilities
The Director is responsible for the overall operation and quality of the Summer Program in Archaeology, including participant selection, oversight of the budget, program planning and preparation, lectures, site visits and evaluation of student performance. While certain duties may be delegated to Academy staff, overall the Director's duties will include:

  • preparing draft budget for the program;
  • preparing itinerary for the program;
  • providing guidance to the New York office on advertising and marketing strategies;
  • arranging student lodging and travel;
  • preparing and distributing orientation information and course materials;
  • organizing lectures and tours;
  • coordinating permessi for site visits;
  • coordinating field trip transportation;
  • evaluating assignments and grading final exams if there are such; and
  • reporting to the American Academy before September 1 about the progress of the course and providing suggestions for its improvement
The New York office of the Academy assists with publicity; preparation of informational materials on the program; providing information to interested candidates; and other general administrative, budget and accounting tasks.

The Rome office and its staff will help with securing permessi, making local travel arrangements in the Rome area, addressing budget questions and concerns, as well as providing oversight of the program.

Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Roman history and material culture from the earliest times to the age of Constantine;
  • Knowledge of museums and sites in and around Rome;
  • Knowledge of Italian;
  • Knowledge of Latin; and
  • College or university faculty member with an appropriate degree
