Earlier this month, the American Academy in Rome hosted Coins, Counting, and Community: Exploring the Deep Data of the Roman Republican Die Project, a two-day conference examining the insights emerging from the Roman Republican Die Project (RRDP), a major digital initiative documenting thousands of Republican-era coins. In a review published by the American Numismatic Society’s blog Pocket Change, Lucia Carbone highlighted how the event gathered leading scholars from archaeology, history, and numismatics to discuss how die studies and deep data can illuminate the workings of the Roman Republic’s economy, society, and state.

Meadows praised the conference for showcasing the RRDP’s methodological advances, such as open-access digital tools for mapping minting activity and circulation patterns. He noted that beyond technical achievements, the project is building an international scholarly community dedicated to reinterpreting Republican Rome’s political and social structures through numismatic evidence. The event at AAR demonstrated the power of collaborative, interdisciplinary research to rethink the dynamics of ancient history.
