The American Academy in Rome is proud to announce today the recipients of the 2026–27 Rome Prize and Italian Fellows Program.

On May 4th, the American Academy in Rome, in collaboration with Aspen Institute Italia, will explore the history, present, and future meanings of research. This conference, bringing together historians, artists, and scientists, aims to show how our understanding of this important subject is expanded by treating it comparatively; by putting different aspects of it into conversation and by looking both to the past and the present in order to think better about the future. 

The American Academy in Rome is honored to announce that it has received a $3 million bequest from Michael C. J. Putnam, beloved Fellow, Resident, and Trustee, in vital support of the Humanities. In fond remembrance, we share the following reflection on Michael's illustrious life and career, written by colleagues John Bodel and David I. Ketzer, Brown University and featured in 'Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome' vol 70, 2025.

For the third year, the American Academy in Rome marks Black History Month with a program exploring histories of power, memory, and justice, alongside the lived experiences and trajectories of Black bodies across space and time. This year’s initiative emphasizes institutional dialogue and site-responsive approaches, examining how knowledge is produced, contested, and reimagined through place and collaboration, while highlighting the participation of some of our 2025-26 Rome Prize Winners in programs across Italy.
