Epic Events
Descrizione del progetto

In the United States, Greco-Roman culture has enjoyed the privilege of being considered both authoritatively ancient and curiously timeless. Epic Events is a classical reception book project that explains how this paradox facilitates various responses to 9/11’s significance as an epoch-making event. Delving into a heterogenous archive of literary texts, films, speeches, and memorials from the last twenty years that engage the Greco-Roman classics, Epic Events disaggregates temporalities the post-9/11 discourse of national unity obfuscates. Especially interested in works produced by racially minoritized artists, the project strikes new ground by demonstrating the necessity of comparative racialization for classical reception studies and by connecting these temporal rhetorics to the discipline’s future(s).
