Christine Sun Kim
Christine Sun Kim is an artist whose work explores the politics of sound, language, and accessibility through drawing, performance, and time-based media. Born deaf and working across multiple disciplines, she investigates how sound operates socially and culturally, often questioning who has authority over its use and interpretation. Her practice reconsiders systems of communication and challenges dominant narratives of voice, speech, and listening, with projects that span the visual, sonic, and textual.
Kim’s work has been exhibited internationally at venues such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, and the Venice Biennale, where she represented the United States in the 2024 edition. In 2020, she delivered a widely viewed performance of the American Sign Language rendition of the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Kim holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and a second MFA from Bard College’s Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts.
