Free Britney? (2022)
Molti lavori recenti sono “ritratti a parole”, composti da linguaggio di o su artisti o altri personaggi pubblici. La mia ricerca si concentra spesso sugli artisti, sulla loro immagine pubblica, sui loro contesti spaziali o sulle implicazioni sociali della loro arte.

SM BNRZ 03 (2021)

Biografia

Tony Cokes è artista e docente presso il Dipartimento di Cultura Moderna e Media della Brown University di Providence (Rhode Island). Le opere di Cokes sono state esposte a livello internazionale e sono state recentemente esposte in personali presso Haus der Kunst e Kunstverein di Monaco di Baviera (2022), MACRO Museo d’Arte Contemporanea (Roma, 2021), CIRCA (Londra, 2021), Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Barcellona, 2020), il centro di arti audiovisive ARGOS di Bruxelles (2020), Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts dell’Università di Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2020), BAK,basis voor actuele kunst (Utrecht, 2020), Luma Westbau, (Zurigo, 2019), il Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art (Londra, 2019), the Shed (New York, 2019), Kunsthall di Bergen (2018), e REDCAT (Los Angeles, 2012). Several recent works are “Word Portraits,” composed of language by or about artists, or other public figures. My research often focuses on artists, their personas, their spatial contexts, or the social implications of their practices.

SM BNRZ 03 (2021)

The video explores some of the dreams, ambitions, and meanings in queer club cultures via sampling international voices from texts produced by Karmaklubb* (Oslo), and other sources. The work traces movements from melancholy to resilience.

Biography

Tony Cokes is an artist and professor in the Department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University, Providence, RI. His work has been exhibited internationally and was most recently featured in solo exhibitions at Haus der Kunst and Kunstverein Munich (2022); MACRO Contemporary Art Museum, Rome (2021); CIRCA, London (2021); Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Barcelona (2020); ARGOS center for audiovisual arts, Brussels (2020); Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA (2020); BAK,basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht (2020); Luma Westbau, Zurich (2019); Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art, London (2019); the Shed, New York (2019); Kunsthall Bergen (2018); and REDCAT, Los Angeles (2012). Cokes has screened works in group exhibitions at venues including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Hammer Museum, Tate Modern, and Carnegie Museum.
