Project title
Yup’ik Masks in the “Anima Mundi” of the Vatican Museums (collaborating with Sean Mooney)
Project description

At the invitation of the Museo Etnologico ‘Anima Mundi’ of the Vatican Museums, Chuna McIntyre and Sean Mooney plan to study the museum’s holdings of Yup’ik ceremonial masks and dance regalia, which was collected by Jesuit Catholic missionaries to Alaska in the early twentieth century. Specifically, the masks currently on display in Anima Mundi were collected at the request of Pope Pius XI, in preparation for the Vatican Missionary Exhibition (1925). The timeliness of our proposal, then, is a celebration of the centenary of this collection. We have collaborated for twenty-plus years on collecting historic data on Yup’ik ceremonial masks and have co-curated museum exhibitions on the subject. We plan to use the concentrated study period together to primarily document Chuna’s lifetime of accumulated knowledge, and draft a publication, a proposed “catalogue raisonné” of Yup’ik masks. The Vatican collection would be included in our global study of this cultural heritage.
