Project title
Martyrs, Vessels, and Perpetual Becoming: An Emergence in Rome
Project description

Martyrs, Vessels, and Perpetual Becoming is a semiautobiographical multimedia memoir culminating in a three-part mixed-media art installation: an experimental biopic film series, a visual album, and an educational podcast series. These works will be embodied through three personas—Tameka Jenean Norris, Meka Jean, and T. J. Dedeaux-Norris—each co-narrating the project’s exploration of identity, transformation, and the Black queer femme experience. During my fellowship, the project will evolve through site-specific installations responding to the city’s rich religious and historical context. Rome’s sacred spaces—catacombs, amphitheaters, and churches—will serve as both inspiration and backdrop as I engage with themes of martyrdom, spiritual resistance, and self-creation. The convergence of my personal narrative with the stories of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas will form a visceral framework for examining death, rebirth, and the pursuit of the American Dream.
