Biography

Sebastian Hierl is the Drue Heinz Librarian at the American Academy in Rome, with oversight over the Academy’s Library and Archives. He holds an MA and PhD in comparative literature from the University of South Carolina and a master’s in library science from the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining AAR, he held responsibility for Widener Library’s Western European collections at Harvard University. Before Harvard, he served as bibliographer for English and Romance languages and literatures at the University of Chicago. Hierl’s first professional librarian position was at North Carolina State University, as an NCSU Libraries Fellow and Collection Manager for the Humanities and Social Sciences. He is the recipient of academic and professional awards and an active promoter of open-source software in libraries. He also serves on the steering committee of the network of Roman research libraries, URBiS, and the Art Discovery Group Catalogue.
